Pat Spence

Patricia Spence, of Columbus, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014. She was born in Beckley, WV, the oldest of three. She was a graduate of The Ohio State University and Microbiology Lab Manager at Riverside/Ohio Helath.

Pat was a long time member of SCACM and had been the State Director for Ohio for many years. Here are a few words about Pat which truly expresses her impact on all of her coworkers at OhioHealth and her friends in SCACM:

We were privileged and blessed to have had Pat Spence with us in our Microbiology lab for 30 years. It really is quite impossible to put into words what Pat became to us in those 30 years: colleague, mentor, teacher, friend, inspiration and more. Pat was known, appreciated and loved by virtually everyone who encountered her, which included those throughout the OhioHealth laboratories, antibiotic stewardship and infections control committees, and numerous others throughout the hospital. Clinicians, pathologists, pharmacists and nurses, as well as laboratorians, relied on Pat for her broad and detailed knowledge and comprehension of microbiology. Pat's involvement with SCACM over the years professionally enriched us as she brought her passion and ever increasing knowledge of her chosen field into our lab and into our lives. Her thirst for knowledge and her ability to communicate, together with her broad experience of many years, made a very definite impact on clinical practice and patient care in our institutions. Pat was a rare gem, as a person and as a professional, and we are truly grateful for the time we had with her.
